Shared bills, for iPhone, iPad and the web

Everything Chiipin does.

Line by line

Every line goes to the person who ordered it.

Take a photo of the receipt and Chiipin reads it right on your phone. A receipt your phone cannot read on its own goes to Apple's Private Cloud Compute, which does not store it; either way the photo never reaches us. Assign each item to whoever had it; tax and tip follow along in proportion, so nobody ends up paying for someone else's meal.

A receipt photo read by Chiipin: the restaurant and its $84.47 total fill themselves in, and the bill splits four ways at $21.12 each.

Household

The bills that come back every month.

Rent, electricity, internet — set them once with a due date and a share, and Chiipin adds them for you each month. Everyone in the household can see what's due this month, what's been paid, and who still owes their part.

A household in Chiipin: a September calendar of what was spent and what is due, each housemate's share, who pays whom, and the month's rent, internet and electricity.

Storage

What the house keeps, and what it costs to keep buying it.

Washing-up liquid, rice, the paracetamol nobody can find. Mark something running low and the rest of the household is told. Put the date from the packet on anything that has one and Chiipin says so before it turns, not after. Scan a barcode instead of typing the name — and when you have run out of things, one tap turns the list into the shopping bill, ready to split.

Chiipin's storage screen: a household's seven stored items as cards, three of them flagged for restocking, with days-to-expiry badges on the dish soap and the milk.

Groups

A trip, a shared apartment, a weekly dinner.

Each group keeps its own running balance and its own bills, so the ski weekend never gets tangled up with the weekly groceries. Anyone in the group can add a bill — including one somebody else paid for — and anyone can correct one, with everyone on it told what changed.

Settling up

One payment per person, however many groups you share.

A trip, the house and a weekly dinner all come down to one transfer between the two of you. Add your e-Transfer or PayPal details and whoever is paying you sees them; the person who receives the money confirms it, and it's cleared.

Settling up with one person in Chiipin: what each owes the other nets out to a single $33.16 payment, with the PayPal handle to send it to.

Home Screen

The answer before you open the app.

Keep Chiipin on your Home Screen or Lock Screen: the month laid out with what has been spent and what is still due, where you stand with everyone, and what storage has run out of. Adding a bill starts there too — scan the receipt, say it, or type it — and the same button sits in Control Center.

An iPhone Home Screen with two Chiipin widgets: Add bill, offering Scan receipt, Voice and Type it; and the household's September calendar with a $2,425.55 month total and its latest bills.

iPhone Duo and iPad

A bigger screen, more on it.

Chiipin on iPhone Duo opened flat: your balance, what needs attention and storage on the left of the fold, and the household's month and your groups on the right.
iPhone Duo. On the inner display, Chiipin lays out in two columns that meet at the fold: your balance and what needs attention on one side, your household and groups on the other. Close it, and it's the iPhone app you know.
Chiipin on iPad in landscape: a household's September calendar and bills on the left, and on the right the month's $2,340 total, your part and who settles up with whom.
iPad. The household's calendar and bills on one side, what they add up to and who settles with whom on the other. In a narrow window it lays itself out as it does on iPhone.

No ads, and we never sell your data. What you and your friends owe each other stays between you.
